Last summer I received a phone call from a man who claimed to be my grandson’s lawyer. He said my grandson had been arrested, and needed $9,000 for bail, and that he would pick the money up from my home within the hour.
The premise sounded very strange to me; I asked to speak to my grandson and was denied. I then asked for the law firm the lawyer worked at and a contact number, and was denied again. The “lawyer” was becoming impatient and not acting very professionally in their tone and language. Eventually, after some discussion, I told them if I couldn’t talk to my grandson or anyone else, I’d phone the police department directly to get more details. They hung up immediately.
I know that scams happen over the phone all the time, although this scenario was new to me. Now that I know more, I would have just hung up the phone at the beginning.
